In honor of the 161 individuals who lost their lives in the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin on May 22, 2011, the Boomtown Run has been renamed the Joplin Memorial Run. It will take place Saturday, May 19, 2012, a date chosen to correspond as closely as possible to the city-wide activities that will commemorate the first anniversary of the tragedy.
One of the friendliest cities in America; Joplin, Missouri, is your host for two days of competitive running, running related events and entertainment for the entire family.
The Run was created in 2003 as part of Joplin’s annual Boomtown Days Festival. In 2009, the event changed to include a half marathon along with our traditional 5k race. Although the course, sponsors and participants have changed, the goal of the Joplin Memorial Run has not. It was and still is to promote healthy lifestyles and to be the most runner friendliest half marathon in America.
