The 2012 event will begin at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center (elev. 5225) on Highway 12, at the Idaho-Montana border. The half-marathon winds for 13 miles through forests of Engleman Spruce and White Pine, with dramatic views of the Bitterroot Mountains in the distance. The 13-mile loop will pass Packer Meadows, a historical site along the Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark trails.

A beautiful loop course of 14+ miles. Some serious uphills and downhills at 5,000+ feet elevation. The course is an unpaved trail of gravel and dirt, with some rocks and uneven places. Weather was cool. The course goes through a national forest with some amazing views. The race is near the Montana-Idaho border, but the course is entirely in Idaho. By far my slowest race, but a real challenge and lots of fun. Local race organizers were very friendly. Field was capped at 400 runners. The race was worth the trip.

This race is actually in Idaho, within 20 feet of the Montana border. This was probably the most beautiful and most challenging race I've done yet. The course is at a much higher altitude than I'm accustomed to (5100 - 5900 ft, we're under 1,000 in Kentucky), goes over several ridges, is on a trail, and is actually 14 miles long. Taking that into account, we took it easy and even allowed ourselves time to stop and take photos of mountain vistas, waterfalls beside the trail, a field of wildflowers, and me gasping for breath! An absolutely gorgeous experience.

Run it slow and look around at the beautiful scenery.

This is a real challenge but the scenery is beautiful. It is entirely on dirt. ?This year there was some snow drifts to work through, beautiful waterfalls, and some mud but and was only 37degrees at the start but sunshine warmed it up soon.

Fourteen hilly miles in gravel is a "half-plus." A great experience if speed is not a primary goal. Scenery can't be beat.
